Calculating Volume

water displacement (Archemedes' Principle)

How do we calculate the volume of a regular shaped object?
How do we calculate the volume of an irreugalr shaped object?
Why is displcement often refer to as the "bathtube" method?

  1. You can calculate the volume of a regular shaped object by multiplying the length times height times width. We can calculate the volume of an irregular shaped object by subtracting the volume of the water with the object in it by the volume of the water alone.

  2. RC you had that wrong. To measure a regular shaped object it is length times width. But you had it right for an irregular object. You are supposed to get an graduated cylinder put in water to a benchmark number and then put the object in. Then you record the difference and that's the mass of the irregular object. Because the method is like a bathtub. When I take a bubble bath and I fill the tub up to 1 gallon and when I get in the tub's water is going to rise. So I am the irregular shape and the tub is the graduated cylinder. Or it can be the other way around

  3. You can calculate the volume of a regular shape by multiplying length times height times width, like RC said. You can calculate the volume of an irregular shape object by using water displacement.

  4. I agree with Naiomi on how to calculate the volume of irregular and regular shaped objects.
Displacement is often reffered to the
"bathtube" method because when you place an object in the graduated cylinder, the object makes the liquid rise. This occurs in a bathroom as well, when you fill a tub up with water then soak your body in it. When you enter the tub, the water level rises. The only diffference between the two examples is that in the first example you use a graduated cylinder (tube, instead of a tub, in the second example.

  5. To find the volume of a regular shape is to multiply the lenght, width and height. To find the volume of a irregular shape is to put liquid in the graduated cylinder, measure the liquid then put the irregular shape and see how much it rise then subtrat the two numbers that how you find the irregular shape.

  6. ---to calsulate the volume of a regular object you have to multiply lenght*height*width then you put cm3 at the end of the product you get.
---to get the volume of an irregular oject you have to use the displacement method wich is placeing the object in a graduated cyliner that have a certin amount of water in it, then you subtract the amount of water you got when you placed the object by the amount of water befor you place the oject in it then you put cm3 to the end of the answer
---the displacement method is called the bathtub method because as the object gose in the water it push the water out of the way just like when you fill a bathtub and go in it

  7. We can measure the volme of a regular shaped object by multiplyng height time width time length. We can measure irregular shaped object by taking a graduated cylinder and putting water in it. Then note the initial water level and put the object in the cylinder and note the water level. Next subtract the water level with the object from the initial water levele. The difference is the volume of the irregular shaped object. Displacement is often refered to bathtube method because in both the water rises when an object or person displace the volume.

  8. You can calculate the volume of a regular shaped object by multiplying the width, the height, and the length together.
