Measuring with Straws

Were we able to measure the area of our desks accurately with straws? Why? Why not?

  1. In class, the people at their table had to measure the length of the brown desk. We were not able to measure the area of our desks accurately with straws because some tables got half straws and some tables got full straws. Also, we didn't measure accurately because we compared the data from other tables and the areas ranged from 6-17. We all had the same brown desks.

  2. In class we weren't able to measure our tables accurately with straws. We couldn't because the straws that Ms.Lindsay gave were all different sizes. Even though the whole class did it on the same type of desk. It wouldn't have mattered. Some groups got a short straw or a longer straw.

  3. I agreed with Rahul because not all the desks were measured with the same straws. Some were shorter than the rest. This is why a standard unit of measurement is needed.

  4. In class we were told to only measure the length and width of the BROWN TABLES. We were not able to measure the area of our desks accurately because we were not all given the same straws. At the end of this experiment, we realized that some of the groups had shorter straws that others. We did not have a standard unit of measurement, as Naiomi has said. My unit of measurement would be NINCOMPOOPS OR JELLYBEANS. Just saying!

  6. No we were not able to measure our desks with straws accurately because the whole class had different sizes of straws. some people needed more straws to measure their desk so this isn't a standard unit/system.

  7. No, we weren't able to measure accurately because there were different sized straws.

  8. No, we were not able to measure the area of our desks accurately. Each of the groups had different sized straws and when we wrote about the amount of straws each of the groups had to use to measure our desks on the board, all of the groups had different amounts. So our measurements were inaccurate.
